Purusha & Prakriti
Samkhya philosophy is dualistic and says that Prakriti is the main material cause of the world. Prakriti is the first and ultimate cause of all gross and subtle objects. In the presence of prakrita, purusha gets gets attracted to nature and becomes entangled in the physical world of prakriti. Then purusha forgets that it was ever separate from prakriti.
In Samkhya philosophy, through the practice of yoga, we remember how to separate ourselves from the entrapments of the physical world, else the soul be reincarnated again and again, it is not about “union” of the body and mind as many modern yoga practitioners believe. It is about leaving the body behind in the desire to become one with this universal vform of consciousness, or Brahman. In modern Hinduism, Samkhya philosophy has been absorbed into the more modern Vedanta philosophy but many of the Samkhya’s dualistic ideologies are still present in the yoga texts, including Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.
