Mantra & Chanting

Picture
Chanting allows us to become one with the vibration of the very nature of ourselves. The body is made up of energy and that energy has resonance. When we chant, we willingly resonate with this vibrational quality of ourselves.

Notice the vibration inside of your torso as you chant. The sound initiates at back of the throat and move towards the lips as it leaves your mouth. Some of the effects of such a practice include:
  • A calming effect caused by regulated, slowed-down breathing
  • A pleasant, harmonic sound massage for the chest, belly, spine, and head
  • Improved organ function; improved concentration and other brain functions
  • An indescribable feeling of well-being, peace, and harmony that can only be experienced to be properly appreciated
  • Last, but not least, it provides an ideal introduction to several kinds of meditation and spiritual practices
  • List adapted from Sounds like OM, by Dick de Ruiter, et al (Red Wheel/Weiser 2006)

When chanting, it is recommended that you chant 108 repetitions (or some variable of 108, 54, 27, 18, 9, 3). What is the significance of 108?
